IBADAN — Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has named Abimbola Adekambi, a former Commissioner for Finance under the late Governor Abiola Ajimobi, as his preferred successor for the 2027 governorship election.
The decision was confirmed Wednesday night by the Oyo State Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Michael Ogunshina.
Speaking in a telephone interview, Ogunshina stated that while a formal public declaration has not yet been made, the Governor’s choice has been communicated to the party’s rank and file.
“Yes, it is confirmed, the governor has announced him,” Ogunshina said.
The selection reportedly followed a series of high-level consultations involving key political stakeholders and power brokers within the state.
Adekambi, a technocrat with a background in finance and public administration, served in the cabinet of the late former Governor Ajimobi.
His selection is being viewed by political analysts as a strategic move to prioritize fiscal management and governance experience in the state’s next administration.
The announcement has already begun to trigger shifts within the Oyo State political landscape.
While supporters describe the move as a strategy for continuity and competence, the endorsement of a former official from a previous administration is expected to prompt internal discussions within the PDP and influence the strategies of opposition parties ahead of the 2027 polls.
