The House of Representatives has raised urgent concern over the confirmed case of Ebola Virus Disease in Abuja, following the detection of the virus in a woman who arrived from Uganda on October 20th, 2026.
The case, which has prompted health authorities to trace and isolate 44 contacts, was brought to the floor through a Motion of Urgent National Importance moved by Rep. Amobi Ogah from Abia State.
In his Presentation, the Lawmaker warned that any delay in detection, isolation, contact tracing and clinical management could escalate transmission and overstretch Nigeria’s fragile healthcare system.
He expressed concern over inadequate public awareness, insufficient infection prevention supplies and gaps in the preparedness of healthcare workers to contain a potential outbreak.
In its resolutions, the House mandated the Federal Government to immediately place all federal, state and private health agencies on high alert and urged the Federal Ministry of Finance to release all outstanding appropriated funds to relevant health institutions.
The lawmakers also tasked the Federal Ministry of Health and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention to intensify surveillance and public sensitization in line with global best practices.
