Former members of the House of Representatives have backed the establishment of State Police as a legislative response to Nigeria’s insecurity.
Speaking at the 2nd Annual Distinguished Parliamentary Lecture organized by the House of Representatives Press Corps in Abuja, Reps. Henry Nwawuba and Ndudi Elumelu said the reform should bring policing closer to communities while strengthening federalism.
Nwawuba, who is currently the Executive Secretary of the National Assembly Library Trust Fund, said the Parliament must respond to insecurity through policy innovation, not sympathy messages.
He also acknowledged concerns about funding for State Police but said Nigeria must try a new approach, noting that insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results.
