The bill seeking to establish the Oyo State University of Agriculture and Technology, Igboora, on Tuesday, scaled second reading at the Oyo State House of Assembly, marking a significant milestone towards the birth of the institution.
The plenary session was presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Honourable Muhammad Abiodun Fadeyi, in the absence of the Speaker, Right Honourable Adebo Edward Ogundoyin, who was away on an official engagement.
Sponsored jointly by Speaker Ogundoyin and the lawmaker representing Ibarapa Central/North State Constituency, Honourable Peter Ojedokun, the legislation provides the legal framework required for the formal establishment and take-off of the university.
According to the assembly, the proposed institution is designed to broaden access to higher education, boost agricultural research, foster technological innovation, and drive human capital development across Ibarapa zone and the entire state.
Following rigorous deliberations on its general principles, the Deputy Speaker referred the bill to the House Committee on Education (Tertiary Institutions, Science and Technology) for holistic scrutiny.
The committee is expected to interface with critical stakeholders, examine the bill clause by clause, and submit its report ahead of the third reading and final passage.
