The six Area Council Chairmen of the Federal Capital Territory have again failed to appear before the House of Representatives Public Accounts Committee to answer audit queries involving about one hundred billion naira.
The Auditor-General’s 2021 report shows the councils – Abaji, AMAC, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje and Kwali – have outstanding liabilities of seven point six five billion naira from unremitted pension deductions, PAYE, VAT, withholding tax and unpaid contractors.
AMAC accounted for the highest at two point one nine billion naira.
The report also faulted the councils for poor asset records and is seeking explanations for twenty-four point eight seven billion naira spent on personnel and overheads in 2021 without supporting documents.
Consequently, Committee Chairman, Representative Bamidele Salam, has issued a final seven-day summons to Directors of Personnel, Finance and Heads of Audit of the councils to appear unfailingly on October 14th, or face sanctions in accordance with service rules.
