The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has appealed to the National Assembly to increase its allocation from the five per cent statutory aviation revenue pool from 22 per cent to 56 per cent to cushion the rising cost of maintaining safety-critical infrastructure.
Managing Director of the agency, Engineer Farouk Umar, made the call at a public hearing organized by the House Committee on Aviation, stating that the current sharing formula no longer aligns with NAMA’s heavy operational burden in keeping the country’s airspace safe.
In a related submission, the African Aviation and Aerospace University (AAAU), Abuja, called on the federal legislature to formally recognize aviation manpower development as a key sector deserving statutory funding.
Presenting the institution’s position paper, Acting Vice-Chancellor, Mustapha Abdullahi, emphasized that AAAU holds a distinct role as Nigeria’s sole specialized federal university dedicated to aviation and aerospace disciplines.
Earlier, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Abbas Tajudeen, reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to strengthening the aviation sector’s financial framework to build investor confidence and safeguard air travelers.
Also speaking, Chairman of the House Committee on Aviation, Honourable Abdullahi Garba, lauded stakeholders for their contributions, noting that the proposed legislative reforms aim to enhance safety, transparency, and service delivery across the industry.
