A Member of the House of Representatives, Rep. Peter Uzokwe, has called on the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to immediately institute a comprehensive investigation into the alleged assassination attempt on former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in Benin City, Edo State.
The lawmaker while addressing news correspondent described the reported incident as “deeply disturbing and unacceptable in a democratic society,” warning that any act of political violence threatens the stability of the nation and the sanctity of its democratic process.
Rep. Uzokwe noted that an attack on a presidential aspirant transcends partisan politics and must be viewed as a direct attack on Nigeria’s constitutional democracy.
Uzokwe stressed that the Nigeria Police Force, under the leadership of the new Acting IGP, must demonstrate professionalism and urgency in handling the matter.
The federal lawmaker however called on the Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, to take proactive steps to guarantee the safety of all political stakeholders within the state, noting that leadership demands accountability and responsiveness in moments of crisis.
He also urged political leaders across party lines to condemn the alleged attack unequivocally and called on security agencies to rise above partisan considerations in their investigations.
