On Wednesday, global tech giant Apple marked a moment reminiscent of the golden era of tech innovation as it took the wraps off its latest generation of iPhones at the iconic Steve Jobs Theater, pulling back the curtain on a widely anticipated foldable device christened the Duo.
The high-profile unveiling marked the grand debut of the company’s new Chief Executive Officer, John Ternus, who formally took over the reins from long-serving boss Tim Cook on September 1.
Addressing an eager audience of tech enthusiasts, global media, and industry analysts after cycling through updates to the Apple Watch, AirPods, and cutting-edge artificial intelligence advances, Ternus dropped the classic tech-world tagline: “Actually, there is one more thing.”
The phrase, delivered with characteristic poise, nodded to the trademark expression immortalized by the late Steve Jobs—who himself borrowed it from the 1970s detective television series Columbo.
The crown jewel of the presentation, the Duo, boasts what Ternus described as the “largest display ever on an iPhone, yet fits into your pocket.”
When fully opened, the device reveals an expansive 7.6-inch display, measuring a staggering 80 percent larger than the newly minted iPhone 18 Pro.
In a groundbreaking shift for iPhone users, the Duo introduces full Apple Pencil compatibility—a creative capability previously restricted to iPad users.
“The Duo will redefine the experience of using a foldable phone,” Ternus declared to applause, highlighting the device’s multitasking prowess.
Users can seamlessly split the screen to run two distinct applications simultaneously, or open twin windows of the same website side-by-side for seamless comparison shopping.
Before the grand reveal of the foldable wonder, Apple showcased the standard flagship lineup: the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
According to Apple, the new Pro models feature massive performance leaps, enhanced camera configurations, and extended battery efficiencies—yielding up to an astonishing 45 hours of continuous video playback on the Pro Max variant alongside dramatically faster charging times.
The upgraded camera system introduces sophisticated “cinematic effects” drawn directly from standard video captures, coupled with expanded manual controls and “smart focus tracking” designed to keep a lock on single moving subjects, such as a child darting across a soccer pitch.
Furthermore, Apple placed heavy emphasis on Siri’s next-generation artificial intelligence capabilities, deliberately staking its claim on stringent user privacy and security protocols to carve out a distinct identity in a market where rival firms have raced ahead in AI integration.
While competitors like Samsung, Motorola, and Google have populated the foldable market for years, Apple’s deliberate, unhurried entry aligns with its historical strategy of prioritizing refinement over speed.
Industry watchers note that the base price for the standard iPhone 18 has edged upward by roughly $100 compared to previous generations, driven largely by an ongoing global memory chip shortage affecting technology supply chains worldwide.
For Nigerian tech consumers and ardent lovers of luxury gadgets, acquiring Apple’s latest masterpieces will require heavy financial mobilization against the backdrop of prevailing exchange rates.

Apple announced that global pre-orders for the iPhone 18 series will open on Friday, September 12, with official retail availability slated for September 18.
However, enthusiasts eyeing the revolutionary foldable Duo will have to exercise prolonged patience, as its market rollout is scheduled for October 23.
