The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has inaugurated a two-day Anti-Corruption Education and Sensitisation Workshop for its personnel, tagged “Corruption-Free Election: Integrity Matters (C-FEIM),” at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
Declaring the workshop open on Monday, the INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, who was represented by a National Commissioner, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, stated that the training was imperative given its proximity to the 2027 General Election.
He noted that the commission, serving as the nation’s electoral umpire, holds the mandate to drive conversations that mold national values, stressing that elections remain the bedrock of the country’s democracy.
The INEC boss lauded the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) for its role in facilitating the workshop, describing it as a strategic initiative tailored to enhance staff capacity, foster the sharing of best practices, and generate actionable recommendations to guide personnel throughout the electoral process.
In his address, the ICPC Chairman, Dr. Musa Adamu (SAN), represented by the Director of Legal Services, Mr. Henry Emore, observed that corruption remains a major obstacle to development in the 21st century.
He explained that the theme of the workshop underscores the commission’s dedication to supporting government initiatives focused on ensuring the conduct of free, fair, and equitable elections.
Dr. Adamu further described elections as defining moments for the nation, emphasizing that the responsibilities vested in INEC demand the highest standards of accountability, responsibility, and transparency.
