The United States Mission in Nigeria on Monday confirmed the temporary closure of its Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos in observance of the 2026 Labour Day holiday in the United States.

The diplomatic missions will remain closed to the public on Monday, September 7, 2026, halting routine consular services, including visa processing, for the day.

The development forms part of the schedule of public holidays observed by US diplomatic missions in Nigeria for the remainder of 2026, which covers both American and Nigerian holidays.

The United States observes Labour Day annually on the first Monday of September to honour the contributions and achievements of American workers.

Recall that the US Embassy had earlier announced that routine visa services would be processed through the Consulate General in Lagos effective August 1, 2026.

Members of the public requiring routine consular services are expected to await the resumption of normal operations. Normal diplomatic and consular business is scheduled to resume immediately after the holiday break.
