Redeemer’s Health Village (RHV) in Ogun State has achieved a groundbreaking milestone in healthcare delivery by successfully performing its first-ever robotic-assisted surgery.
This achievement was announce on Wednesday at the Redeemer’s Health Village in Ogun State after the facility successfully performed its first robotic-assisted surgery.
The landmark procedure—a robotic-assisted prostate cancer surgery performed on a middle-aged man—was executed through a collaborative effort between RHV’s in-house medical team, local urology experts, and US-based robotic surgeons from RoboMed Global Inc.
This milestone highlights a major leap forward for Nigerian and African healthcare, combining cutting-edge technology with expert medical skills.
According to Professor Obi Davies- Ekwenna, an expert Urology and robotic surgeon, Robotic technology provides surgeons with superior visualization, a magnified camera view, and up to 540 degrees of instrument mobility, effectively eliminating natural human hand tremors.
Davies-Ekwenna, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of RoboMed Global, highlighted that the minimally invasive approach uses smaller incisions, resulting in minimal tissue damage, significantly less blood loss, and lower risks of wound infection.
Moreover, he added that Patients can comfortably return home as early as the same day or the next day following the procedure.
Speaking on the achievement, RHV Chief Executive Officer Adedamola Dada emphasized that the institution aims to become the premier healthcare destination across Africa.
He noted that the facility is committed to making advanced robotic procedures affordable and accessible to patients regardless of their social status.
Building on this success, RHV plans to expand its robotic surgery program to address a wider range of conditions, including cervical, uterine, and colonic cancers; complex urological conditions, such as a scheduled procedure to reverse a congenital kidney deformity in a 28-year-old doctor.
Lead robotic surgeon and RoboMed Global CEO, Professor Obi Davies-Ekwenna, reinforced that while the machine grants unprecedented control and dexterity, the surgeon remains entirely in command, ensuring optimal safety and superior clinical outcomes.
