The Independent National Electoral Commission has clarified reports circulating on social media about suspected AI-generated photographs in the Preliminary Register of Voters published on its website.
In a press statement issued today, by the Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, the Commission said the register published online on 26th October 2026 is the same preliminary register displayed at Registration Areas nationwide from 9th to 15th October 2026 as part of the Display, Claims and Objections exercise.
It disclosed that questionable records were identified during the physical display and flagged for further examination.
INEC explained that the online publication represents the original preliminary register and does not reflect ongoing data-cleanup activities.
It stressed that the preliminary register is not the final certified register, noting that the display exercise was specifically intended to allow public scrutiny and enable corrections before certification.
The Commission said it is examining the circumstances behind the suspicious photographs, including possible technical or procedural lapses, and will take appropriate action based on verified findings.
While appreciating the vigilance of citizens and stakeholders, INEC assured Nigerians that all verified irregularities will be addressed and that the final Register of Voters will be certified on 15th December 2026.
