The Oyo State has launched round-the-clock monitoring of the Ibadan metropolis to bolster urban sanitation.

This enforcement drive targets illegal scavengers and has resulted in the immediate closure of a non-compliant food facility.

The state Environment Commissioner, Hon. Ademola Aderinto, during a press conference, confirmed that the move is designed to regulate metal scavengers (popularly called “BOLA”), stop infrastructure vandalism, boost public safety, and ensure a cleaner, more sustainable Oyo State.

While reiterating that the Ministry’s statutory responsibility is to keep Oyo State clean and free from all unregulated activities that could pose environmental and public health hazards, he disclosed that unchecked scavenging has contributed to environmental degradation and insecurity in some parts of the state.

The Commissioner warned that open scavenging remains strictly prohibited. Offenders face arrest and prosecution, with penalties including community service, jail time, or fines between ₦20,000 and ₦50,000.

Meanwhile, a total of 19 illegal scavengers apprehended within the Ibadan metropolis have been prosecuted and fined accordingly based on their respective offences.

In a related development, the Ministry has also sealed a food processing facility located within a residential area at Wofun, Ibadan, due to excessive emissions from the facility, an offence in clear contravention of established environmental standards and guidelines.

The commissioner however  called on members of the public to cooperate with government efforts and desist from obstructing law enforcement officers in the discharge of their lawful duties.
