Digital Medicine: Why Nigeria Must Bridge the AI Gap Now

The federal government of Nigeria has been advised to keep up with global advancement by making sure that artificial intelligence is put into use in all government parastatals in order to level up with other developing countries.

Dr. Tokunbo Adekanlamade made the call in Ibadan at the annual general meeting and scientific conference 2026 hosted by the Association of Private Medical Practitioners, Oyo state branch held at the NMA house Ibadan.

In his lecture titled “AI and private medical practice: cutting edge development,” he noted that the Nigerian government must become intentional about the advancement of AI globally, putting into consideration its importance to national development.

While he disclosed that AI innovation is already defining the operation and performance of all professional fields, including medicine, he noted that adopting this now will help professionals and governments leverage cutting-edge technology in the delivery of services.

The second Speaker, the Oyo state commissioner for police, CP Olufemi Haruna, who was  ACP Kazeem Olakunle, speaking on the subtheme of insecurity and its implications for private medical practice in Nigeria, emphasized the need for doctors to strengthen their collaboration with the police and other security agencies at all levels, ensuring that any suspicious activity or threat is reported.

The state chairman of ANPMP, Dr. Olumuyiwa Ajanaku, while speaking on the importance of the lectures, reassured residents of medical practitioners’ commitment to upholding ethical and professional medical practice.

Moreover, he advocated for the welfare and safety of private practitioners, partnering with government, security agencies, and stakeholders to strengthen healthcare delivery.
