The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has received a delegation from the African Union, AU, on a pre-election assessment mission to Nigeria.
The delegation was led by his Excellency Demeke Mekonnen, Head of Mission and former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.
Stating the essence of the courtesy visit, the mission said it prioritizes engagement with key stakeholders on preparations for the upcoming polls, to support a successful electoral process, expressing optimism for credible polls in 2027.
It further added, that part of its focus areas includes voter registration and education, application of technology, and proper election management among others, aiming at initiating public confidence.
Responding on behalf of the INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, the National Commissioner, Professor Rhoda Gumus, who noted that the visit comes at a pivotal period for the nation, stressed that the Commission is monitoring operational deployment and inter-security agency collaboration.
Professor Gumus also urged the mission to carry out its assignment objectively, while pledging the Commission’s full commitment to transparency throughout its visitation.
