NiMet predicts 3-day nationwide rains, sunshine, issues advisory

THE Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted a combination of rains and sunny weather across the country from Monday through Wednesday.

According to the weather outlook released by the agency on Sunday in Abuja, sunny skies with a few patches of clouds are anticipated over the northern region on Monday, with isolated thunderstorms accompanied by light to moderate rains expected over parts of Taraba State in the afternoon and evening hours.

NiMet forecast a cloudy atmosphere with intervals of sunshine over the North-Central region throughout the forecast period.

“For the southern region, a cloudy atmosphere with intervals of sunshine is expected over the region with chances of thunderstorms accompanied by light rains over parts of Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states.

“Later during the day, there are prospects of thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rains over parts of Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Lagos, Edo, Delta, Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Anambra, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River and Akwa Ibom states,” the agency stated.

For Tuesday, NiMet forecast sunny skies with a few patches of clouds over the entire northern region, with prospects of isolated thunderstorms accompanied by light to moderate rains expected over parts of Taraba State later in the day.

A cloudy atmosphere with intervals of sunshine is anticipated over the North-Central region, while the southern region will experience similar conditions before thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rains set in later in the day over Ondo, Osun, Ogun, Lagos, Imo, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Bayelsa, Edo, and Delta states.

On Wednesday, the agency predicted sunny skies with patches of clouds over the northern region and a cloudy atmosphere with sunny intervals over the North-Central region throughout the forecast period.

The southern region is expected to experience a cloudy atmosphere with sunny intervals, followed by thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rains over parts of Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers states later in the day.

NiMet warned that strong winds may precede the rains in areas where thunderstorms are likely to occur, advising the public to take adequate precautions and ensure loose objects are securely fastened to prevent collisions.

The agency further urged the public to avoid driving under heavy rain, disconnect electrical appliances from sockets, and stay clear of tall trees to avoid falling branches. Airline operators were also advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports (flight documentation) from NiMet for effective operational planning.

Warning of high temperatures and potential thermal discomfort, NiMet advised Nigerians to wear breathable clothing, remain in well-ventilated environments, and stay adequately hydrated.
