Africa has notched a significant milestone in its sustained campaign to rectify historical distortions in global cartography, following the adoption of a landmark resolution by the United Nations General Assembly.
The resolution, which canvassed the backing of 164 member states, champions the promotion of map projections that faithfully capture the authentic proportions of the world’s landmasses. Prominent among these is the “Equal Earth” projection, formulated in 2018.
The vote witnessed the United States casting a dissenting vote, while six other nations opted to abstain.
Spearheaded by Togo on behalf of the African Union, the diplomatic triumph trails a similar resolution enacted by the pan-African body roughly a year ago under the auspices of the #CorrectTheMap initiative, which commands the backing of all AU member states.
At the core of the continental agitation is the ubiquitous Mercator projection. Devised centuries ago, it remains deeply entrenched in global school curricula, cartographic texts, and digital navigation architectures.
Although celebrated for preserving directional angles crucial for maritime navigation, the Mercator model notoriously distorts landmass areas, with the distortion magnifying progressively away from the equator.
Consequently, regions residing in higher latitudes are visually inflated, while Africa is graphically diminished relative to its actual territorial magnitude.
In contrast, the Equal Earth projection is engineered to mirror the true surface areas of continents in accurate proportion.
Proponents of the campaign maintain that the crusade transcends mere technical cartography, arguing that cartographic representation fundamentally shapes global geographical, economic, and geopolitical worldviews.
Advocates contend that accurate visualization stands to transform educational frameworks, technological applications, and public consciousness, dismantling deeply entrenched biases regarding Africa’s global standing and geopolitical weight.
Togolese Foreign Minister, Robert Dussey, framed the push as a fundamental scientific imperative, canvassing an urgent overhaul of the traditional narrative governing perceptions of the continent.
Although the newly minted UN General Assembly resolution carries no binding legal force, it nonetheless delivers a potent symbolic triumph for Togo and the African Union in their collective quest to redefine Africa’s international image.
Through the strategic maneuver, Lomé has successfully elevated what was long dismissed as an esoteric cartographic technicality into a major global conversation concerning dignity, equity, and Africa’s rightful place on the world stage.
