The House of Representatives will reconvene for an emergency session on Tuesday, February 17, to amend the Electoral Act following concerns over the 2027 election timetable.

The move comes after INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, fixed the Presidential and National Assembly elections for February 20, 2027—a date that coincides with the holy month of Ramadan.

To address potential voter turnout issues, lawmakers intend to rescind their previous decision on the Electoral Amendment Bill.

The proposed change seeks to reduce the statutory election notice period from 360 days to 300 days, granting INEC the flexibility to shift the polls away from the fasting period.

Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, through his Chief of Staff, emphasized that the House aims to conclude all legislative processes in a single day to ensure the democratic process remains inclusive.
