Junior Chamber International Ibadan Elite has taken a bold step towards a greener future with the launch of its Go-Green Eco-Gardening Initiative.
The initiative, which was part of JCI Ibadan Elite’s “Deepening Roots, Elevating Excellence and Possibilities” DEEP Agenda, signalled the start of a long-term movement to promote climate consciousness, eco-friendly practices, and greener living.
Speaking at the launch during the organisation’s general assembly, Oyo State Commissioner of Agriculture, Barrister Olasunkanmi Olaleye, underscored the importance of sustainable agriculture and food security at the household level.
Represented by the Director of Planning, Research & Statistics of the ministry, Mrs Adeniran-Adediran, Barrister Olaleye said that to achieve a green and eco-friendly society, the government and non-governmental organisations must continue to collaborate in raising awareness about its benefits and prospects for agricultural development.
He said the Oyo State government was committed to ensuring food security and adequately addressing the agricultural initiatives of the Seyi Makinde administration.
In an address during a practical session, the CEO of Newline Alternative Services, Ambassador Omobola Alli-Emmanuel, emphasised the need for Nigerians to create personal gardens using recycled materials.
Ambassador Alli-Emmanuel, however, guided JCI Ibadan Elite’s members through simple, hands-on techniques for setting up and maintaining home gardens.
Also speaking, 2026 JCI Ibadan Elite President, JCIN Amb. Ibukun Otesile said the launch aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs, particularly SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
President Otesile also said the initiative seeks to plant indigenous vegetables, herbs, and ornamental plants while building a strong network of eco-gardeners.
She hinted that the next phase will focus on expanding participation, strengthening partnerships, and ensuring measurable SDGs impact.
The highlight of the event was the empowerment of 15 JCI Ibadan Elite members with Eco-gardening kits with the aim of growing cucumbers in their houses, amongst them is the 2026 JCI Ibadan Elite President, JCIN Amb. Ibukun Otesile, 2025 JCI Ibadan Elite President, JCIN Amb Ilerioluwa Johnson; 2022 JCI Ibadan Elite President, JCI Senator Goodness Morakinyo; 2023 JCI Ibadan Elite President and Current JCI Nigeria Executive Vice President North West JCIN Amb Lanre Alawode; Chairman JCI Ibadan Elite Go-Green Eco Gardening Initiative, Mr Johnson Olaoluwa, among other prominent JCI Ibadan Elite members.
