Preparations for the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference (COP31 Türkiye) have gathered momentum as the summit’s presidency released its third letter to state parties, outlining a robust roadmap centered on ten priority themes.

The framework, designed to accelerate climate implementation, bolster international cooperation, and mobilize practical solutions, anchors its priorities around the six core pillars of the Global Climate Action Agenda while maintaining alignment with the outcomes of the Paris Agreement’s first Global Stocktake.

The ten priority areas set to guide the path toward Antalya include the clean energy transition and electrification, zero waste and methane reduction, climate-resilient cities, green industrialization, youth and education, and food security. The agenda also emphasizes oceans and seas, dynamic and resilient health systems, Rio conventions synergies, and building a bridge toward concrete climate implementation.

Financial backing, technological innovation, and capacity building will serve as cross-cutting elements across all ten areas, ensuring that the commitments translate into scalable and measurable results.

The developments come amid a pivotal year for international environmental governance marked by a “triple COP” convergence across the Rio Conventions. Highlighting the intersection of these milestones, executive leaders from the UNCCD, UNCBD, and UNFCCC—Yasmine Fouad, Astrid Schomaker, and Simon Stiell—recently issued a joint call emphasizing unique opportunities for the private sector to drive sustainability.

Meanwhile, regional momentum continues to build across the Global South. Latin America recently advanced its domestic climate targets during the Regional Forum on NDC Implementation held in Santiago, Chile. Convening from August 24 to 27, regional representatives exchanged strategies and tackled critical hurdles in turning national climate pledges into ground-level execution.
